New book: “A Voice Like Mine” by Deb Haaland

We’re excited to welcome another inspiring Indigenous-authored book to the SweetGrass Trading Co. collection.

“A Voice Like Mine” is the memoir of Deb Haaland, who has broken barriers throughout her career in public service. From becoming one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress to serving as the first Native American cabinet secretary in U.S. history, Haaland shares the experiences that shaped her path and the values that continue to guide her.

In “A Voice Like Mine,” readers get a personal look at the challenges and milestones that defined Haaland’s life. She writes about growing up in New Mexico, working in her grandfather’s cornfield, navigating poverty and single parenthood, and finding her voice as an organizer and public servant.

The book’s title comes from Haaland’s congressional campaign slogan, “Congress has never heard a voice like mine.” Throughout the memoir, she reflects on the experiences that inspired her to step into leadership while remaining grounded in her Pueblo of Laguna heritage and her commitment to serving others.

Haaland also shares what it meant to become the first Native American to serve in a presidential cabinet. Rather than focusing only on historic moments, she offers an honest look at the work, perseverance and community support that helped her reach those milestones.

“A Voice Like Mine” is a thoughtful read for anyone interested in Indigenous leadership, public service and the personal stories behind historic firsts. It is also a reminder of the importance of representation and the impact one person can have by opening doors for future generations.

At SweetGrass Trading Co., we’re proud to offer books by Indigenous authors that share diverse voices, experiences and perspectives.
