We are thrilled to announce Aaliyah Chappell as the 2024 recipient of our scholarship. Aaliyah is a proud member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and hails from Federal Way, WA. She currently resides in Bothell, WA, where she is pursuing a major in Computer Science with a minor in American Indian Studies at the University of Washington Bothell.
Aaliyah’s commitment to her community is evident through her involvement with the Seattle Indian Health Board as a Youth Intern, as well as her active participation in the Native American Youth Leadership Academy and the Native American Youth Council.
Her passion for technology and dedication to her roots drive her long-term goal of becoming a software engineer, where she aims to inspire Indigenous youth to see themselves in the fields of computer science and technology.
“By integrating modern technology with traditional knowledge, I aim to use coding as a tool to create educational programs using technology to help other Indigenous youth reconnect to their culture,” Chappell said. “Through the games and applications I hope to make, I can guide Indigenous youth on the right path to learning about the cultures they come from, regaining connections and building their sense of belonging.”
In the short term, Aaliyah is focused on developing innovative 3-D printing techniques to create animal prosthetics, combining her technical skills with her compassion for all living beings.
“This scholarship will empower me to continue striving towards a future where Indigenous youth are represented in all STEM fields, as our presence and desire to take action are essential to making change within our communities,” Chappell said. “It will also support my effort in making change within Indigenous youth and their reconnection to culture, ensuring that our cultural identities continue to thrive for current and future generations.”
This year’s application process was highly competitive, and we extend our sincere thanks to all who applied. We wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.
