SweetGrass Trading Company, a proud member of the Ho-Chunk Trading Group and a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk, Inc., is excited to announce that the application period for our 2025 Native Scholarship Program is officially open. As part of our ongoing mission to foster economic development for the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, we are thrilled to extend this opportunity to Native students across the country.
At SweetGrass, we are committed to empowering Native communities not just through business growth, but also by providing opportunities for education and advancement. This scholarship program is designed to support Native college students who are enrolled members of federally recognized Indian Tribes. We believe that by investing in the education of Native students, we are helping to build a stronger and more vibrant future for all Native people.
About the Scholarship:
Each year, we award a $1,250 scholarship to a successful applicant who demonstrates academic promise and a commitment to higher education. This scholarship can be used at a 4-year college, a 2-year community college, or a technical college, helping to ease the financial burden of tuition and other educational costs.
Over the years, our scholarship recipients have gone on to pursue a variety of fields, including political science, computer science, Native American studies, biology, business, anthropology, and more. We are proud of the diverse paths our past winners have taken and look forward to seeing where this year’s recipient will go.
Last year’s recipient, Aaliyah Chappell, said the scholarship has helped her succeed in her first year of college. Chappell is a freshman studying computer engineering at the University of Washington.
“The scholarship has been an immense help when it comes to funding not only my college education but my future career involved in our Indigenous communities,” Chappell said. “It has given me the flexibility and motivation to continue my academic and cultural opportunities that support my growth as a student in STEM. I’m incredibly grateful for this support and the impact this has had on my education.”
