The 1st Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Friendraiser, hosted by the Nebraska Tribes Addressing Violence Coalition (NETAV), took place on October 12 at Yates Illuminates in Omaha. This event aimed to raise awareness for domestic violence and promote the work of NETAV, a statewide tribal domestic violence and sexual assault coalition dedicated to serving Native American communities in Nebraska. Guests enjoyed heavy appetizers, mocktails, and participated in raffle drawings, with all proceeds supporting the coalition’s efforts.

One of the featured raffle items was a Native Favorites Gift Box from SweetGrass Trading Company. This raffle item highlighted the support of SweetGrass Trading Company and the inclusion of their gift box further underscored NETAV’s commitment to supporting tribal businesses and raising awareness for Native communities. Other raffle items included a handmade star quilt, Pendleton blanket, ribbon skirts, beaded jewelry and ledger artwork.

Andy Snowball, treasurer on NETAV’s board of directors and an attorney at Big Fire Law and Policy Group, LLP, played a key role in organizing the event. She shared that her decision to include a SweetGrass Trading Company item in the raffle stemmed from her experience as a Winnebago community member and her connection to Ho-Chunk, Inc.

She noted that SweetGrass’s products, particularly the candles and tea, are widely appreciated in the local community, and she chose to support the company due to its ties to the Tribe and local businesses.

The event’s impact is expected to be far-reaching, allowing NETAV to continue its mission of supporting tribal domestic violence programs in Nebraska. Through training, technical assistance, and advocacy, the coalition works to educate and raise awareness around issues such as teen dating violence, elder abuse, and healthy relationships.

Additionally, NETAV’s Helping the Helpers Program has been instrumental in providing self-care support to tribal domestic violence program advocates, addressing burnout and turnover while bolstering the safety resources available to Native American survivors of violence.
