Ho-Chunk Way program to fund Chief Little Priest memorial

At SweetGrass Trading Company, we are proud to be part of a larger mission that goes beyond business — a mission grounded in service, legacy, and community. That mission is carried out through the work of our parent company, Ho-Chunk, Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

Each year, Ho-Chunk, Inc. supports a special cause through its Ho-Chunk Way Employee Donation Program, a powerful initiative that channels employee giving into meaningful projects benefiting the Winnebago community. Since its launch in 2017, the program has raised more than $600,000 for impactful projects that uplift and strengthen the Tribe. Previous projects include the revitalization of Big Bear Park, Winnebago Senior Citizens Center, and the Whirling Thunder Wellness Center.

We’re honored to share that the 2025 recipient of the Ho-Chunk Way Employee Donations Program is the Winnebago Veterans Service Office, in partnership with the Winnebago Veterans Association. This year’s contributions will support the creation of a memorial to honor Chief Little Priest and his 75 Warriors.

Honoring a warrior and his legacy
Chief Little Priest holds a sacred place in Winnebago history. In 1844, at just 15 years old, he became the youngest—and last—war chief of the Tribe. A fierce protector of his people, he served during a time of great challenge. In April 1866, he was mortally wounded in battle and returned home, where he passed on September 12,1866.

His story continues to inspire and is honored each year at the Winnebago Homecoming Celebration—an event that brings the community together in remembrance and pride. The new memorial will be a lasting tribute to Chief Little Priest and his 75 warriors, ensuring their legacy lives on for generations to come.

A community-funded commitment
The Ho-Chunk Way program is entirely employee-driven. Team members at Ho-Chunk, Inc. voluntarily donate a portion of their paychecks to fund projects that directly benefit the Winnebago community.

At SweetGrass Trading Company, a subsidiary of Ho-Chunk Trading Group, we are honored to help share stories like this—stories that highlight the strength, resilience, and generosity of our community. Every purchase made through our store contributes to a larger movement to uplift Native voices, businesses, and traditions.
