When winter settles in and the days grow shorter, we naturally reach for meals that are grounding, nourishing, and deeply comforting. One of our favorite cold-weather staples at SweetGrass Trading Company is a hearty wild rice bowl—simple to prepare, endlessly customizable, and rooted in thousands of years of Indigenous food knowledge.
Wild rice has been a staple of Native American diets for more than 10,000 years. Historically, entire communities depended on wild rice to sustain them through long, cold Northern winters.
At SweetGrass Trading Company, we are honored to carry wild rice harvested and stewarded by Indigenous communities in Northern Minnesota:
- Red Lake Nation Quick Cook Wild Rice
Grown and harvested on Red Lake Farms in Northern Minnesota, this wild rice is distributed and wholly owned by the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians of the Red Lake Nation. It offers the same rich flavor and nutrition as traditional wild rice, with a shorter cooking time—perfect for busy weeknights.
- SweetGrass Trading Company Wild Rice from Leech Lake
Harvested from the pristine lakes and rivers of Northern Minnesota, this wild rice is naturally grown as nature intended by members of the Leech Lake Indigenous community. Traditional harvesting methods are passed down from generation to generation, strengthening cultural ties while providing economic sustainability.
Wild rice is incredibly versatile. It can shine as a simple side dish, but it also works beautifully as a base for grain bowls. Its nutty flavor and chewy texture pair well with both savory and sweet ingredients, making it easy to build meals that feel satisfying without being too heavy.
Beyond bowls, wild rice is also used in:
- Muffins, waffles, and pancakes for added texture
- Batters and stuffings
- Sweet foods, where it’s puréed and mixed with fruit preserves
A simple wild rice bowl base
Start with this basic foundation, then build from there:
- Cooked wild rice (quick cook or regular)
- A drizzle of oil or butter
- Salt to taste
Then, get creative with your toppings! Here are some ideas to get started:
- Savory and smoked
Add roasted root vegetables, sautéed greens, and flaked smoked salmon for a deeply satisfying bowl. A soft-boiled egg or a dollop of Greek yogurt brings everything together. Keep things traditional with a Three Sisters-inspired bowl!
- Sweet and earthy
Wild rice also shines in sweet bowls. Top warm rice with toasted nuts, dried fruit, and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey for a comforting breakfast or light dinner.
- Berry & game-inspired
Channel traditional flavor pairings by adding roasted squash, nuts, and a spoonful of chokecherry syrup for a subtle tart sweetness that complements the rice beautifully.
- Hearty and herbaceous
Mix in mushrooms, onions, garlic, and fresh herbs like thyme or sage. Finish with a splash of broth or smoked salt for extra flavor.
Wild rice bowls are a simple, practical way to bring this traditional food into everyday winter cooking. Whether you keep it savory, sweet, or somewhere in between, wild rice offers nourishment, versatility, and comforting during the cold months.
